If you are planning on proposing to the love of your life, then you need to purchase an engagement ring to express you love and commitment. Traditionally, engagement rings are designed with a setting and a diamond in the middle. Since there are so many diamonds at varying price ranges, the 4 C’s were established to determine important qualities of each stone. They are cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. Learn more about each category as you begin shopping for the perfect diamond for your bride to be.

Cut

The cut of a diamond ring for rose gold engagement rings should not be confused with the shape. The shape of the stone is more basic (emerald, pear, round). On the other hand, the actual “cut” describes the reflective qualities of a diamond. A better cut will enhance how a diamond looks. Therefore, it is arguably the most important “C” in all 4 of the categories. When you have a good cut you receive a brilliant stone. The angles on the diamond will softly reflect the light from the room.

Finding the right cut can be a challenge. However, you should look for one where light enters at the table on the diamond. Then, the light travels to the diamonds pavilion and reflects out to both sides. If the diamond is not well cut, the light will enter at the table and leak out at the bottom or sides. The effect is less brilliant and not as mesmerizing.

Clarity

In terms of the clarity of a diamond, you are looking to identify any flaws in the stone. Since diamonds are not grown in a perfect laboratory, they a bound to have flaws. When determining the clarity of a stone, flaws are classified into the following two categories:

  • Blemishes
  • Inclusions

Blemishes are flaws on the actual stone such as pits, scratches, and chips. Some of these happen during the cutting process. Inclusions are found within the stone and are flaws like cracks, air bubbles, and non-diamond minerals found in the stone. Although these flaws can lower the quality of a diamond, they also prove that the stone is a real diamond. After all, it is rare to find a flawless stone. Therefore, look for one with few flaws.

Color

When discussing the color of a diamond, typically a jeweler is referring to an absence or presence of color in a white diamond. This color is the result of the diamond’s composition, and it never changes. A colorless diamond is preferred, because it lets more light in like a clear window.

Carat Weight

Lastly, when purchasing your diamond you will need to determine the carat weight. This is how jewelers measure stones. The larger the carat you select, the more expensive it will be. Determining the right size you should be based on you budget and you preferences. It is also important to consider the setting and the person when you choose the carat size.

Shopping for diamonds and an engagement ring can be overwhelming. Hopefully, this guide can help you select the perfect diamond stone. Now all you need to decide is the shape and setting. If you need some inspiration check out these over the top engagement rings!
