mama

Rest In Peace Mama

When my late mother-in-law contracted cancer and eventually became bed-ridden during the last few months of her life, my father-in-law, tried as much as possible to make her very comfortable. He bought her a wheelchair, got her one of those hospital beds, a privacy screen so that we could change her in private when she had guests and even a machine that sucks out the phlegm/liquid from her lungs so she can breath easy. All those equipments were really pricey but for Mama’s comfort, Abah didn’t bat an eyelid. I think that if Mama suffered from a heart condition, Abah would have even gotten her one of those  ecg machines as well.

It’s now six months already since her passing. Abah has not stopped visiting her grave and has not missed out a day of sending her prayers. We all miss her. Rest in Peace Mama…

Mama was discharged yesterday from the Damai Service Hospital.

They removed the monitoring system and the urine bag the night before and left the feeding tube as Mama is still unable to swallow food. The doctor is still prescribing her steroids as she is still very weak and hopes that with the steroids in place keeping her strong this weekend, we can pull out the feeding tube by Monday or Tuesday.

It was so disheartening to watch her yesterday. Although the doctors had said her tumor and cancer were gone, she is still so weak and unable to do the things that she was able to do a week ago. I also can’t bear to see the feeding tube sticking out from out of her nostril but it’s the best solution for her right now to keep her stomach full and her body strong.

We are at home now doing laundry and stuff today as the sisters are home with Abah. We will visit her today to see how her condition is just as soon as I check out the relacore reviews I’ve bookmarked yesterday ;)

Happy Sunday everyone!

In case you missed my blog entry at my Life’s Pages, you might like to know that Mama’s xray today showed no signs of lung cancer and brain tumor! Yeay!!

Of course the doctor will have to order an MRI to fully conclude this but initial findings showed that Mama might be home-free. Recovery will still be tedious especially since Abah plans to totally weaned Mama of the steroid which would means Mama would be tired and weak all the time. However, since it’s possibly the steroid that is making her ramble non-stop, we’re hoping that would improve as well.

Mama is currently being held for a two day observation at Damai Service Hospital. Good thing too as it is much more comfortable and away from the oncology ward that Mama is so scared off. She keeps saying she don’t want to hear about anything malignant. Not malignant Mesothelioma, not malignant anything. Poor dear!

Each night that I spoke to Azwaj, our topic of conversation always revolve around Mama. It seems mama had not any seizure attack since that Thursday night but she did vomit on Sunday, possibility from the lack of food intake these past few days. She now, once again, has difficulty swallowing and she had to be fed very slowly. She is also becoming weak and in fact did not even wake up from her sleep, when some of her cousins visited her yesterday.

Abah is worried that he had called of his doctor friend to come and visit mama and give some prescription medicines and hopefully Mama’s condition would improve soon. According to the doctor, getting a specific proven brand name of medicine is important as most times there are some differences in the quality of the medicine. Generic prescription medicine may be cheaper and easier to be obtained (some can even be obtained off the shelves) but sometimes there might be undesirable side effects that might be harmful to the patients and cause more harm then good. .. and I totally agree.

For instance, when I had to use Ventolin often for my asthma, which was badly controlled one time, I was offered a generic one as the the pharmacist did not have the regular one that I used. I thought, since it was on the recommendation of the pharmacist, it would be fine. I was wrong. The Ventolin did not work at all. In fact even after taking a few more puffs then I was used too, I was still wheezing. Luckily for me, I had some last puffs from my regular Ventolin inhaler and I was saved. Otherwise… let just say.. I won’t even be seeing Mama now.

Anyway, I’m still worried about Mama and I might even be cutting my stay here in Singapore by a few days, that is if I can get all my things done on time! Still so many things to do!

As a lot of you know, my mama (mother-in-law) has lung cancer and brain tumor. Although she has gone for an operation to remove the cancer in May and gone through the radiotherapy for both the lung cancer and the brain tumor, her situation has not improved very much. Though during the last medical checkup, the doctor was impressed with her improvement and actually took her off the steroid, she is now getting weaker and rambling nonsense non-stop. She is keeping Abah (father-in-law) up all days and nights. Me, A and his siblings take turns looking after mama during the day but most times she wants abah and abah being the doting husband, always wants to be by her side.

fallNow Abah is not a strong man and carrying mama on and off the bed (when we are not around) for her to eat and use the portable toilet, can be quite taxing. We are always worried that sometimes in the process, both of them might fall down! This is where Medical Alert system like the the Fall Alert detector and the GPS Tracking Bracelet will come in handy. The first Medical Alert gadget, the Fall Alert, is suitable for home use in that in case there is any fall, it alerts emergency personnel that abah or mama have fallen and help can come immediately. The GPS Tracking has a two way speakerphone in that they can call for help should the need arise.

I thought both gadgets are super cool and would be appropriate in our situation and we would definitely bring it up with the rests of siblings. In the meantime, we just have to make sure Abah is not overworked and mama is comfortable by always being there and being on standby so with that.. I bid you bye bye for now and we have to buy them lunch!

The past few days have passed by in a blur.

I wake up, get dressed, went to Mama’s house, help out with her care for the day, helped around the house a bit and then leave about 9pm after dinner. Then once I arrive home, fed the kitties, clean the litter bin, try to get some work done online, TRY being the operative word of course, while trying to keep my eyes open. Then I crash into bed and my day starts again at 7am the next day. I haven’t called my mom in days!

It’s never easy taking care of a bed-ridden patient. It’s even more stressful than going to work. However, Mama needs all the support she can get in order to get better though putting on a smile and trying to be cheerful all the time can get taxing sometimes when you are dead tired.

BUT…

Whatever don’t kill me only makes me stronger!

Firstly, I want to wish all my readers who are celebrating Christmas, A Merry Christmas indeed! I hope you guys had a wonderful time with all your loved ones.

Merry Christmas
It was a quiet day for us. Since we don’t celebrate Christmas, I took the opportunity to work late finishing up some jobs that is due before the new year. Azwaj used to time to clear out one of the upstairs room at his parents house for us to use whenever they spend the night there taking care of mama. By the number of baby strollers in that room, you’d think my inlaws had more than two grandchildren… lol!

By the way, mama is now able to sit on the single seater which must feel great for her. It is no fun lying down on the bed looking at the ceiling all the time! Bravo Mama!
