How to overcome white screen after WordPress 3.0 install

As I mentioned in the post at my blog Life’s Pages, I just had a tortured three hours when I decided to upgrade to WordPress 3.0. If I had been one of those people that break out when stressed, I would probably need the best acne treatment right about now.

The thing was I actually upgraded three of my other blogs first before upgrading this blog. The three upgrades went smoothly without a hitch, so my confidence level was an all time high. Then when upgrading this blog, I had an installation error and my whole blog disappeared. So if you were trying to access my blog and got a blank page instead, now you know the reason why.  I immediately went to the WordPress forum for help. It seemed I was not alone. There were others in the same boat and everyone it seems was waiting for a solution. Someone suggested that it may have been because of a plugin that was not compatible with the new version and advised that I renamed my plugin directory via ftp. I tried that but was not successful. Naturally I panicked as I don’t know when the “guru” would login and start answering questions. I did more digging and found a suggestion to reinstall the upgrade manually. I did and I was successful! Thank goodness!

So, I would like to share with you what I did to restore my blog.

1. Download wordpress 3.0
2. Uncompressed the files
3. Rename my plugins directory to plugin01
4. Copy the files to the right directory, overwriting the existing files
5. Rename my plugin01 to plugins

From this experience, my advise to you will be, make sure you disable your active plugins before upgrading. This is because some plugins are incompatible with the new version and this might cause problem. In my case though, I don’t think its the plugin as I found the files that was causing the error was in wp-includes.

Wordpress 3.0 is here

Ever since I’ve got my own web hosting and moved to the wordpress blogging platform, I’ve been having a field day with all the new coding work and the limitless plugin extension. I must say I was a bit frustrated and daunted in the beginning because everything was so new but the moment I got the hang of it, I am loving everything about it. I’ve been at the wordpress plugin page too experimenting with each plugin.. lol! And.. WordPress 3.0 has just been released and I heard there are a lot of goodies/features installed there, though I’m waiting before upgrading.

I must also say having my own website hosting is awesome too.No more clamoring bandwidth with other users and no more unnecessary downtime which is beyond my control. Having total control of my website and blog is totally awesome. I totally recommend it!

What are your experiences with wordpress and webhosting? Are you upgrading to WP 3.0 soon?

Music Monday: Leave (Get Out) by JoJo **

Alas I just found out today that WordPress does not support the “textarea” command due to it’s security settings. So I had to find a plugin that allows me to highlight the codes for you guys to copy. I did find the plugin but unfortunately, you got to highlight the text manually inside the code, no more right click and select all :(

Anyways, this is not a hindrance for me of course. Am still loving wordpress and all it’s wonderful plugins and even thinking of moving yet another domain to the platform but can’t decide which one..heheh

LJL Has Moved to Wordpress

One look and you may missed it. Two looks you might not noticed any difference either. However, if you were to comment on this blog, you noticed that I have Intense Debate commenting system installed here. You may think that I may have switch to ID after all and that I prefer it to the other two commenting system I have mentioned before. Well not necessarily true.  Now I can have ID, with it’s smileys and CommentLuv, simply because  I can, without any worries that I will lose my comments due to it’s not syncing with blogger.

Why and how?

The why is because LadyJava’s Lounge have moved to it’s own hosting and blogging platform, from blogger to wordpress,  and the how is because ID have a plug in for WordPress that works beautifully, syncing to each other even when ID fails to load because of slow loading connection. So irregardless of you commenting on wordpress commenting system or ID commenting system, the comments would be intact on both platform!

After using blogger for a few years now on all my blogs, it is nice to change to something new. As I mentioned in my previous post, I like to keep my life interesting so blogging wise, this is it. I won’t be moving over all my blogs as I still love blogger and it’s simplicity but I am glad that I have made the decision to move my main blog, LJL , to the wordpress platform. I’m still tweaking here and there making it me but am pretty happy with the results so far. One drawback though, when I moved, the Google Friend “Follow” widget did not move with the blog as it was somehow attached to the blogspot address.. so if you guys still feel like following me around, please feel free to refollow using the widget here.  Everything is the same and it is still good ol’ LadyJava’s Lounge so don’t be coy and leave your comments and look around ya . (EDITED: I found a way to link up to my Google Friend Widget and got my followers back.. so Yeay! Thank you for following LJL)
